The indigenous peoples of Mexico continue be substantially disadvantaged. According to official figures on multidimensional data from the National Council for Evaluation of Social Development Policy, 72.3% of Mexico’s indigenous population lives in poverty. Many live in small peasant communities in rural areas. Others have had to integrate into mestizo society in order to improve their living conditions.
